According to a court ruling, casino operator Harrah’s must pay about $8 million to casino players who played in the company’s Atlantic City Casino on their birthdays. The casino company lost a class-action suit filed by members of the Total Rewards program who were sent an advertisement about a casino promotion concerning “birthday cash”.

The lawsuit was based on the fact that the vouchers did not say that they could not be redeemed until after 8 a.m. on the days in which the promotion was available. Now, the court ruling states that 80,000 casino players who gambled at Harrah’s casino on their birthday will get $100 each in damages, which means the casino giant will have to pay $8 million.

The first person to sue was Debra Smerling, who went to Harrah’s Atlantic City with a voucher valid for 10th August. When she tried to redeem it at 12.30 that day, the casino refused arguing that the casino day started at 8 o’clock. The same happened to other customers who also decided to sue as well as Ms. Smerling.

Although only the 80,000 Total Rewards members who redeemed their coupons will receive the $100 compensation according to the New Jersey Truth in Consumer Contract Warranty and Notice Act, the other 270,000 Total Rewards members who did not redeem their coupons will be notified of the lawsuit and they could join a separate lawsuit. Harrah’s plans to appeal the court decision.
